US list prices before tax, checked around November 6, 2026 from vendor plan pages and contemporaneous pricing roundups.

Short answer: At the standard individual tier, the three plans cost almost the same: ChatGPT Plus is $20/month, Claude Pro is $20/month (or $17/month billed annually at $200 up front), and Google AI Pro is $19.99/month. Choose ChatGPT for breadth and ecosystem features, Claude for long-document and coding-adjacent workflows, and Gemini (Google AI Pro) when Google storage, Workspace surfaces, and bundled extras make the effective cost lower.

This guide is research-based, using vendor pricing and plan descriptions checked around November 6, 2026. It is not a model IQ tournament. Output quality depends on your prompts, files, and review habits. Prices exclude tax unless a vendor says otherwise.

Why “which AI is smartest?” is the wrong first question

People usually need help with one of these jobs:

  • Drafting and revising writing
  • Research with citations or browsing
  • Working through long PDFs and project folders
  • Coding assistance
  • Living inside Gmail, Docs, Drive, and Photos

All three vendors now sell a free tier, a roughly $20 standard plan, and much more expensive power tiers around $100–$200. If you only compare brand reputation, you can overpay for a power tier you do not need—or buy Plus and Claude Pro together when one plan would cover 80% of the work.

The November 2026 price ladder

Tier ChatGPT (OpenAI) Claude (Anthropic) Gemini / Google AI
Free $0 $0 $0
Budget Go, about $8/month (US) — AI Plus, about $4.99/month
Standard Plus, $20/month Pro, $20/month or $200/year AI Pro, $19.99/month
Power Pro plans from about $100 Max / Ultra from about $100 AI Ultra from about $99.99

Sources commonly used for these figures include OpenAI’s ChatGPT pricing/help pages, Anthropic’s pricing page, and Google AI / Google One plan pages. Always re-check before purchase—model names and included extras change.

ChatGPT Plus: the broad everyday assistant

Plus remains OpenAI’s mainstream individual plan at $20 per month, billed monthly. OpenAI has historically not offered annual billing for Plus. The plan is positioned around higher usage than Free, access to advanced reasoning models, projects, deeper research features, custom GPTs, and expanded coding-related tools such as Codex usage on supported surfaces. Image generation is also part of the ChatGPT product experience for many accounts.

Choose ChatGPT Plus when:

  • You want one assistant for writing, brainstorming, light research, images, and coding helpers
  • You value plugins/custom GPTs and a large third-party ecosystem
  • You prefer a single chat product rather than a Google-account bundle

Watch for:

  • No annual discount on Plus
  • API usage billed separately from the consumer subscription
  • Usage limits that still matter on heavy days
  • The temptation to stack Plus with Claude Pro “just in case”

ChatGPT is often the safest first subscription if you do not yet know which workflow will stick. Start Free, move to Plus when limits block real work, and only then consider a second brand.

Claude Pro: documents, projects, and Claude Code

Claude Pro is $20/month or $200/year ($17/month equivalent) on Anthropic’s public pricing. Anthropic is explicit that taxes may be extra. Pro typically includes higher usage than Free, Projects for organizing chats and files, Research features, and Claude Code—a meaningful differentiator if your writing work mixes with software documentation or actual coding.

Anthropic also sells higher Max/Ultra tiers for users who exhaust Pro. Usage limits often apply across windows (for example, rolling hours and weekly caps depending on the current plan text). Activity across Claude surfaces can share an allowance, so do not assume the web app, desktop tools, and Claude Code each get a full independent quota.

Choose Claude Pro when:

  • Long documents, source packs, and iterative editing are central
  • You want coding assistance without buying a separate IDE-only product first
  • Annual billing savings matter and you will keep the plan for a year

Watch for:

  • Top frontier model access may still involve credits on some tiers
  • Shared usage across products
  • Less “Google ecosystem” bundling than AI Pro

If your day is PDF-heavy analysis and careful prose, Claude is frequently the better $20 evaluation—even if ChatGPT remains useful on Free for second opinions.

Google AI Pro (Gemini): the bundle that changes the math

Google’s consumer assistant plan is sold as Google AI Pro at $19.99/month (names have shifted over time from “Gemini Advanced” language in older articles). The important commercial detail is the bundle: AI Pro commonly includes about 5 TB of Google account storage, Gemini features in Gmail/Docs and related surfaces, and other extras such as YouTube Premium Lite or creative credits depending on the current plan card.

That means the “true” cost depends on what you already pay Google:

  • If you were about to buy 2 TB or 5 TB of Google One storage anyway, part of AI Pro is storage you needed
  • If you live in Docs and Gmail, in-app Gemini can beat switching to a separate chat tab all day
  • If you do not use Google storage or Workspace surfaces, you are mostly paying for the assistant alone

Google also sells a cheaper AI Plus entry around $4.99/month and much higher AI Ultra tiers near $100–$200 for heavier usage.

Choose Google AI Pro when:

  • Your files, mail, and docs already live in Google
  • 5 TB storage has real value
  • You want Gemini’s multimodal and Workspace-integrated features

Watch for:

  • Feature availability can vary by country and account type
  • Coding and agent tools (Jules, Antigravity, and related surfaces) may have separate limits
  • Bundle value collapses if you are not a Google-centric user

Feature fit matrix (practical, not marketing)

Need Lean ChatGPT Lean Claude Lean Gemini
General drafting Strong Strong Strong
Long-document projects Good Strong Good inside Docs
Coding help Strong (Codex / ChatGPT coding features) Strong (Claude Code) Good, Google-tool dependent
Images Strong inside ChatGPT Not the primary story Available in Google’s image tools

Should you pay for two plans?

Often no. A durable pattern looks like this:

  1. Use Free tiers for a week with identical tasks
  2. Subscribe to the one that reduced editing time the most
  3. Keep the second brand on Free for occasional second drafts
  4. Upgrade to a $100-class tier only after you hit hard usage walls for several weeks

Paying $40/month for Plus + Pro can make sense for professionals who truly split writing and coding across ecosystems. It is a poor default for students or casual users.

A seven-day test that produces a real decision

Day 1–2: Same research brief in all three Free tiers.
Day 3–4: Same long PDF summary and rewrite.
Day 5: Same coding or spreadsheet task if relevant.
Day 6: Same email/doc workflow inside native surfaces (especially Gemini).
Day 7: Add up time saved, factual corrections needed, and frustration with limits.

Keep confidential client data out of consumer accounts unless your policies allow it.

FAQ

Is Gemini Advanced still the plan name?

Marketing names have shifted toward Google AI Pro / Ultra. Older reviews saying “Gemini Advanced” usually mean the paid Google AI assistant tier around $20. Confirm the label on Google’s current subscription page.

Does Claude Pro include Claude Code?

Anthropic’s Pro positioning includes Claude Code as part of the broader Pro value. Confirm on anthropic.com/pricing because packaging can change.

Is ChatGPT Go enough instead of Plus?

Go is a lower-cost US option for lighter use. If you need advanced reasoning models and higher limits as your daily driver, Plus is still the mainstream plan to evaluate.

Bottom line

If you want one flexible assistant, start with ChatGPT Plus. If your work is document-heavy or coding-adjacent, prefer Claude Pro—especially with annual billing. If Google storage and Workspace are already your operating system, Google AI Pro can be the best effective deal at nearly the same sticker price. Re-check official pages the day you subscribe.

Privacy and workplace policy notes

Consumer plans are convenient, but they are not automatically approved for confidential company data. Before pasting customer contracts, unreleased roadmaps, or regulated records into any assistant:

  1. Check whether your employer provides a business workspace with admin controls
  2. Review retention and training settings in the consumer account
  3. Prefer vendor business offerings when compliance requires SSO, audit logs, or data processing agreements

Price comparisons in this guide are for individual decision-making. Team rollouts need a separate security review even when the sticker price looks identical.
